This new webpage has all of the information you need to know of Prototyping History and the main information you need to know on Prototyping. You can visit this Rapid Prototyping History webpage at: http://www.prototypezone.com/misc-prototyping/

Here is an excerpt from the new Prototyping Disadvantages webpage:

“History of Rapid Prototyping:

Sixties: The first rapid prototyping techniques became accessible in the later eighties and they were used for production of prototype and model parts. The history of rapid prototyping can be traced to the late sixties, when an engineering professor, Herbert Voelcker, questioned himself about the possibilities of doing interesting things with the computer controlled and automatic machine tools. These machine tools had just started to appear on the factory floors then. Voelcker was trying to find a way in which the automated machine tools could be programmed by using the output of a design program of a computer.

Seventies: Voelcker developed the basic tools of mathematics that clearly describe the three dimensional aspects and resulted in the earliest theories of algorithmic and mathematical theories for solid modeling. These theories form the basis of modern computer programs that are used for designing almost all things mechanical, ranging from the smallest toy car to the tallest skyscraper. Volecker’s theories changed the designing methods in the seventies, but, the old methods for designing were still very much in use. The old method involved either a machinist or machine tool controlled by a computer. The metal hunk was cut away and the needed part remained as per requirements.

Eighties: However, in 1987, Carl Deckard, a researcher form the University of Texas, came up with a good revolutionary idea. He pioneered the layer based manufacturing, wherein he thought of building up the model layer by layer. He printed 3D models by utilizing laser light for fusing metal powder in solid prototypes, single layer at a time. Deckard developed this idea into a technique called “Selective Laser Sintering”.”

Thank You for Booking With Travel Agent X….have a Safe Flight..to Wherever You May End Up

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

imageHappy Monday! It’s the end of the month, and for us in the retail travel industry, it means a lot of fussing around, reconciling accounts and auditing figures. It’s more fun than your average trip to the proctologist, let me tell you. Today started out with a real cracker though. A lady of Asian descent approached me not long after we had opened, and asked me “Where is the snow, and where can I find ski hire”. This was followed by her husband requesting accommodation for ”Lovely Ski chalet, with many happy, snow playing events”. Now, if you look at the map, the man of the manor and I live on the Gold Coast, in the state of Queensland, in Australia. The last time there was any snow here, was possibly when Tyrannosaurus Rex had his own high rise cavern in Surfers Paradise. If it ever does start snowing in this part of the world, one can safely assume that those who rubbish the idea of Global warming, will be sending Al Gore a Hallmark card saying “Ooops …Our Bad”. What my two Japanese friends were looking for was actually “Queenstown”. A simple mistake to make for sure, and easily rectified by jumping on a plane and flying four hours south to the South Island of New Zealand. Kudos to their Travel Agent! Everyone has probably heard of the story about a travel agent who picked up a call from a woman trying to make a domestic flight in the US.”I want to go from Chicago to Hippopotamus, New York” she said. The agent was at a loss for words. Finally, the agent: “Are you sure that’s the name of the town?”"Yes, what flights do you have?” replied the customer. After some searching, the agent came back with, “I’m sorry, ma’am, I’ve looked up every airport code in the country and can’t find a Hippopotamus anywhere.” The customer retorted, “Oh don’t be silly. Everyone knows where it is. Check your map!” The agentscoured a map of the state of New York and finally offered, “You don’t mean Buffalo, do you?” The woman paused, and then exclaimed happily “That’s it! I knew it was a big animal!”You may think this is quite absurd, but the sheer volume of similar stories which have made their way to my ears from colleagues, is scary, to say the least. I have encountered a surprisingly large amount of unusual (read: Sorry but are you on crack?) queries myself.I have been working in travel in one capacity or another, for quite a few years now, and it is quite a rewarding career. The opportunities for personal travel are terrific, as long as you don’t mind turning prematurely gray in the process.Over the years, I have had clients from Brisbane ask me innocently whether they require a visa for Hobart, or what exciting Australian sights they might see on their walk from Alice Springs to Darwin (The obvious answer being: A lot of bones from previous tourists who had the same bright idea!). Now, I do realise, that some people may be very new to the whole travel thing, and patience must be exercised with those who are just a little nervy about taking the first steps to seeing the world outside of the Rooty Hill RSL.It is, however, a little difficult to keep a straight face when the first question out of a client’s mouth is “Does Social Security have its own airline for people on the dole?” (The appropriate answer to this is: Yes, but be prepared to wear your sturdiest runners, as that tarmac can get a little hot on the soles during that run-up.)To be fair, it is not just clients that are eligible for the all-hallowed ‘D’OH” award. A few years ago, one of my esteemed colleagues, who will remain nameless, greeted a most distressed women who stumbled into the store in tears, needing to get to a funeral, in Panama City.We get ‘compassionate’ flight requests all the time, and they are never pleasant, so my colleague jumped on the system, found the lady flights, booked and sent the tickets straight to the airport, to try and make the arrangements as smooth as possible for the grieving woman.Fast Forward to 24 hours later….I received a phone call from the same lady who advised me that ,whilst my associate had been most prompt and sensitive in her service, she was currently in Panama City…Panama. The funeral was in Panama City….Florida/US. She noted that, even though the airport facilities were somewhat clean, and the dozens or roaming militia men carrying Tommy guns were not hassling her at present, she really needed to be at least another 10,000 miles away to attend the service.I think I can safely speak for the rest of my workmates, that our collective and immediate response was a loud and panicked expletive (Think: Duck…one consonant replaced)Even I have managed to stuff up my own travel arrangements (You know how it is – mechanics have the worst cars, plumbers always have a dripping tap…dentists with breath that could kill a man at ten paces). On a recent trip to Singapore, I thought I would be a bit of a smarty-pants and book my own accommodation online (Even though the internet is a travel consultant’s mortal enemy). I found a great hotel, smack bang in the middle of China Town called the “Royal Peacock”…elegant looking suites, cheap rate and breakfast included. Giddy Up! After an 8-hour flight and arriving at 05:45 in the morning, those lush looking suites and hot breakfast was about all I could think about. When our cab driver dropped us off, I thought perhaps he had made a mistake. No, there was the sign “Royal Peacock”, slightly obscured by boards covering two of the main windows. It wasn’t until we had checked in and put our bags in a room with no sheets on the beds, and a smell that really, could only be urine (no matter what positive spin you put on it, urine is urine) that I thought perhaps, my choice might have less than inspired. Eager to keep our distance from the large, unidentifiable green stain on the curtains, we decided that we would grab the freebie breakfast and then maybe look for another hotel. My friend who was traveling with me at the time, is not a bad looking bloke, but even he was rather surprised to find several women hanging onto his shoulder and offering their hotel “turn down” services over cold rice porridge and crackers. And when I say turn-down services, I am not talking about a little chocolate on your pillow. Only a travel agent could book herself into a brothel! Considering this, I kindly explained the “Queenstown/Queensland” situation to my new-found friends and re-routed their ticket to Christchurch, free of charge. Lord only knows, I may possibly need some similar treatment down the track if/when I send an unsuspecting thick-accented American to Auckland , and not…Oakland.

The Age of Sugar

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

imageOf all the foods we eat, refined sugar is considered to be one of the most harmful. And we eat a ton of it. In face, sugar consumption has increased by 28 percent since 1983, fueling soaring obesity rates and other health problems. The statistics on how much sugar we consume is startling. On average, every American consumes 158 pounds of the white stuff each year! And, according to Marion Nestle, chair of the Department of Nutrition and Food Studies at New York University, the consequences of eating all that sugar can be severe. She notes that, “Because sugary foods often replace more healthful foods, diets high in sugar are almost certainly contributing to osteoporosis, cancer, and heart disease.” But it isn’t just that we are swapping broccoli for Cokes and Krispy Kremes. Sugar consumption contributes to the formation of advanced glycation endproducts (AGEs) that are linked to Alzheimer’s disease, atherosclerosis and other degenerative disease. The higher your AGE levels, the faster you age. The ABCs of AGEs Advanced glycation endproducts are formed when glucose (sugar) reacts with proteins in the walls of your blood vessels. The result is a hard caramel-like compound that interferes with multiple cell functions by changing the functions of proteins. Crosslinking occurs between adjacent protein strands and causes the blood vessels to become stiff. AGEs can cause a rise in C-reactive protein and homocysteine levels. They can also modify LDL cholesterol so that it becomes more easily oxidized and deposited in vessel walls – which can cause narrowing and reduced blood flow. Diabetics are at particular risk since AGEs can cause complications like kidney disease, peripheral neuropathy and atherosclerosis. While there is no way to measure AGEs, if you eat large quantities of refined sugar, you can safely assume that your body is creating too many of these damaging compounds. But sugar isn’t the only culprit. Other “white” foods like bread, potatoes or pasta also contribute to the formation of AGEs. So, how much of a threat are AGEs? Animal studies have shown that if dietary AGE intake is cut in half, the animals had an increased lifespan. A good place for us humans to start is by reducing the amount of refined sugar we consume. That means tossing out the sugar bowl and reading labels to find hidden sugar. Cut Crosslinking With Carnosine Since it’s almost impossible to avoid all added sugar – and since the biological impact of AGEs are largely irreversible – it’s a good idea to bolster your defenses against their damaging effects. One way to do this is by supplementing with carnosine. This small molecule composed of the amino acids histidine and alanine helps defend the body’s proteins against the crippling effects of glycation. By preventing the formation of dangerous AGEs, carnosine may help the body’s proteins retain their youthful vigor and function. Studies also show that carnosine is a powerful antioxidant. Carnosine’s age-defying effects make this critical nutrient an essential cornerstone of every anti-aging program. Carnosine is a safe, well-tolerated nutrient that is naturally present in the brain and skeletal tissue. But, even though the body contains its own supply, supplementing with additional carnosine can help protect the brain against oxygen deprivation and boost vision, especially as we age. Best of all, scientists now know that carnosine can effectively inhibit AGE formation and protein crosslinking. Because carnosine is able to stop free radical damage and inhibit AGE formation, scientists think it may help manage a number of chronic conditions, including arthritis, ulcers, high blood pressure, adrenal dysfunction, sleep apnea, chronic inflammation, cancer, heart disease and Alzheimer’s. A Stinky Solution Aged garlic can also help prevent the formation of AGEs. It’s one reason that aged garlic supplements have gained a heart-healthy reputation. By thwarting AGEs, aged garlic reduces LDL cholesterol and improves the elasticity of blood vessel walls. In a four-year study of 152 cardiac patients, a daily dose of 900 mg. significantly slowed the development of atherosclerosis. Another study, which measured the flexibility of the aorta of 200 patients, reported that the subjects taking garlic had more flexibility, indicating less plaque buildup. The AGE-busting benefits of garlic are due, in large part, to a compound called allicin. This sulfur-rich substance is activated when the clove is crushed and allowed to sit for about 10 minutes. Allicin is then further broken down to a compound called ajoene, which may be the substance that inhibits atherosclerosis and blockages in blood vessels from clots. If you’re just trying to prevent future problems triggered by AGEs, try eating fresh garlic as often as possible. If you’ve been diagnosed with atherosclerosis or if your diet includes large amounts of refined sugar, pick up an aged garlic supplement and take 900 mg. per day. One Last Thing … Want to give up the sweet stuff? Good for you! But, if you’re tempted to substitute artificial sweeteners for sugar, don’t! I know this is a tough one to follow: many of us rely on diet sodas when we are craving something sweet. But in my experience, NutraSweet, Splenda, and even low-carb sugar products don’t quell sugar cravings. In fact, they actually increase them. A study at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio found that a person’s risk for obesity went up a whopping 41 percent for each daily can of diet soda. If you do fall off the wagon, don’t beat your self up. And, for heaven’s sake, don’t use the slip-up as an excuse to dive into a pan of brownies! Giving up sugar is hard. It’s ingrained in our holidays, in our meals, in our society. For those times when you just have to have something sweet, try substituting honey or agave nectar. Agave comes from the same plant used to make tequila. Its sweetness comes primarily from a complex form of fructose called inulin that occurs naturally in fruits and vegetables. What sets agave apart from other sweeteners if that it has a low glycemic index. So you get the sweetness without the nasty “sugar rush” and unhealthful blood sugar spike caused by refined sugar. This Just in … Having a big head isn’t usually something we want to acquire – unless we’re talking about intelligence and not ego. And the bigger the brain, the smarter you are. So how can you maintain your big brain? It’s simple – at least according to new evidence that shows that taking vitamin B12 may help prevent brain shrinkage.

For the study, researchers from the University of Oxford analyzed blood samples from 107 healthy seniors. After comparing the serum level of vitamin B12 with brain size, they found that low levels of vitamin B12 were associated with brain shrinkage. It was so pronounced that people with the lowest levels of vitamin B12 were six times more likely to experience brain shrinkage than those with the highest blood levels. For most Americans, getting enough vitamin B12 isn’t a problem – it’s plentiful in meat, dairy products and eggs. But vegans and people over age 60 may be suffering from a B12 deficiency. If your diet doesn’t include a lot of meat or dairy, it’s important to supplement with this critical nutrient. While vegans should take 3 mcg. per day, there is evidence that absorption of vitamin B12 is reduced with increasing age. Because of that, older adults should take 10 to 25 mcg. daily. It could be one of the smartest things you’ll ever do! Learn More.
